Sassy Hong Kong's Around the World Food Tour!

Thanks to my fellow "falafel" (it's an endearment, really) e.g. my ex-housemate Jiyoung, I had the chance to join Sassy Hong Kong's Around the World Food Tour this weekend! Held at Souvla, a Greek restaurant tucked away on D'Aguilar Street - that's Lan Kwai Fong, HK's party hub, the event showcased restaurant group Concept Creations' various outlets, with their chefs teaching us about their cuisine.

There were four stations... so Jiyoung and I started, along with several others, at the Tapeo station. Tapeo is a popular Spanish tapas bar and restaurant, which is always bustling come Thursday... and the rest of the weekend! We were taught about Iberico ham and how to make a basic aioli. Such simple ingredients: garlic (raw and roasted), egg yolk, white wine vinegar, a dash of sea salt and a healthy helping of olive oil, but such rich flavour!

Next was Chicha, their Peruvian offering. Chef Arturo made us ceviche with leche de tigre, a dish in which raw seafood is cooked by the acidity of its marinade, which usually contains lime juice. We lapped that up happily, topped with a shot of pisco, the local spirit.

I've eaten at Chicha before, and have only the highest praise... My Ecuadorean friend also says that it's pretty authentic so get there at once!

We then learnt about making moussaka, which belongs under Souvla's offerings... finally, the official version, since Jiyoung and I have tried our own stuffed eggplant ad hoc recipes. The crust was, surprisingly, a bechamel... Yummy yummy yummy.

Our last stop was Frites, their Belgian beer hall and resto. Mussels marinière (moules marinière) of course was in order. They have 5 other flavours besides the marinière: house, Hoegaarden, Provencale, laksa (oooh must try!), and pesto.

After that, we were treated to a fabulous buffet lunch, plus a signature dish from each restaurant. Obviously I pigged out on the mussels! A wonderful surprise was the Gruyere, served with lemon and a sweet-savoury fig jam - I'm not much of a cheese person but it was a lovely mix of flavours... party in the mouth really.

Thanks Jiyoung - would've not known otherwise... I have remedied that by subscribing to Sassy's newsletter! And thank you to Concept Creations and Sassy Hong Kong for having us... and the lovely goodie bag, containing recipes, special paprika and Greek salt, Greek biscuits, Belgian beer and chocolates, and manjar blanco (a Peruvian dessert sauce) - check it!
